Blues Basics - Blues Artist Spotlight

NEW to the Blues? Sometimes it is hard for those new to the Blues to explore this journey called the Blues! 's weekly artist spotlight introduces (or reminds experienced Blues fans) about a Blues artist worth knowing about. Last week we started at the beginning and featured the biggest Blues legend ever - Robert Johnson.

This week we feature the other end of the Blues spectrum, modern electric slide Blues virtuoso, Sonny Landreth. He is one of the most amazing musicians around today. is offering a video of Sonny that lets you see his Blues guitar/slide technique close-up. It is quite impressive. CLICK HERE to go to see this video.

Also be sure to visit Sonny's website at:

All Music Guide has more information and a complete discography of Sonny too! CLICK HERE to read more about him at their site.

Blues Reviews of the Week! features a concert review of Sue Foley, Debra Coleman and Roxanne Potvin at the Nothin' But The Blues Fest by Ben Cox

Sue Foley, Deborah Coleman, Roxanne Potvin
Nothing But the Blues Festival
Bloomington IL  7-20-07
Performance review by Ben Cox

Sexy (I hope my wife’s not reading!), Soulful, and Sensational is all have to say about these three ladies. Their performance as the headliners for the first night of the Nothing But the Blues Festival was a great exclamation point on an otherwise beautiful evening for all the blues anyone could handle.

On tour supporting their newest release, Time Bomb on Ruf Records, the ladies exploded into the crowd’s ears with the title track instrumental to start the show. The old adage of “Do they play as good as they look?” was answered with a definite standing ovation in favor at the end of the first tune. The youngest and on her first tour of the United States, Roxanne Potvin took the mic first with all three ladies still on stage for the sassy “Hitting On Nothing” for the next track, which was met with equal .....   CLICK HERE to read more

We also feature a review by James “Skyy Dobro” Walker , noted Blues writer and contributor.  James reviews Bobby Rush's new solo CD - Raw.

Bobby Rush - Raw
Deep Rush Records

By James “Skyy Dobro” Walker
13 songs; 51:58 minutes; Excellen

For someone new to the Blues, or new to Bobby Rush, this CD could be a good starting place. As the title Raw implies (as well as the cover photo of him barely covered), the music is performed in stripped down fashion almost completely by Rush himself.

In the Blues world, Rush is a giant with a career spanning decades. His full band live shows are legendary for read-deal blues, earthy good humor, and the dancing booty-girls. Now, imagine all the trappings gone leaving only Rush with acoustic guitar, harmonica, stomping feet for rhythm, and singing. That approach recapitulates the earliest bluesmen: solo and acoustic with just the human voice communicating deep feelings.

Rush is 67 years old which puts him in a later generation of blues singers born in the South. With this CD, he is not trying to re-do Robert Johnson, as many artists like Rory Block and Eric Clapton have done. The album does convince listeners that Rush has the music in his bones and that everything else starts with that.

All the songs are written by Rush except the surprising choice for the opening track, “Boney Maroney” plus “School Girl” and “Howlin ‘ Wolf.” Shawn Kellerman plays Dobro slide guitar for 3 tracks. While the remaining songs are originals, echoes of blues standards can be heard here and there. For example, “What’s Going On” is reminiscent to Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightnin.’” The protagonist’s “3 Problems” on the last track are the familiar, “woman, girlfriend, and wife.”

For up tempo fun, try “Knockin’ On Your Door.” Studio overdubbing allows some interesting magic impossible for the earliest artists. On “I’m Tired” Rush plays a standard harmonica and a chromatic harmonica in unison.

With this CD, not even the harshest critics can dismiss Rush as just a flashy showman. His blues are real and raw!

Microwave Dave & the Nukes - Down South Nukin’
Rockin’ Camel Music 2007

By Ben Cox

Microwave Dave Gallaher is a musical veteran who’s been plugging away as a slide guitarist since before a lot of the newer guys who are heaping up a lot of success on blues radio were even born. Gallaher is steeped in the traditions of the Deep South and Chicago. He has a laundry list of folks he’s had the pleasure of playing with and has the chops to show for it.

Recorded live at the 2nd Street Music Hall in Gadsden, Alabama in April, August, and November 2005, this 12-song set is loud, raucous, great party music that will find you tapping your feet along to the beat. Dave’s band, the Nukes are about as in the pocket as you get, and for the power-trio set up, they are about as solid as any big band around. Their style is steeped in the slide guitar work of J.B. Hutto, Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor and may ring a little bit familiar with the fans of Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials. In fact, two Hutto songs appear on this disc....
